As you read this, the Class A football championships are taking place on the SDSU campus.
Canton lost their regular season game to Tea Area, but beat them in the semi-finals. Undefeated Dell Rapids defeated West Central 14-0, only to lose to them in the opening round. Lennox then defeated West Central to advance to the finals.
The one item that stood out was the teams making it to the championship game were playing their best football at the end of the season.
The head football coach at Lennox, Matt Luze, was formerly the middle school coach at Elk Point-Jefferson.
Football sportsmanship may need some improvement. As I watch highlights on special programs on KELOLAND and Midco Sports, one trend is starting to emerge – runners heading for a touchdown holding an arm in the air well before the end zone or turning and facing sideways as an opponent chases them. These actions would be flagged at the Division I level. It may need to be reviewed in South Dakota.
Dreams can come true. Minnesota’s field goal against Penn State was kicked by a true freshman. His high school was Sioux Falls Washington.
Everyone travelled a lot this post-season. Herreid-Selby went to Harding County on the Montana border to gain a win and advance to Brookings for the championship game.
Ronette Costain is the longtime head volleyball coach at Harrisburg. Her program has advanced as the school has grown. She is consistently producing Divison I players.
The state volleyball tournament has all three classes together in Rapid City.
