Big name football schedules are changing dramatically as some conferences limit their play to conference opponents.
BYU, an independent, has lost its first four games and its season finale. That includes the season opener at Utah which is called the “Holy War.” For local BYU fans, the Sept. 24 date against Minnesota is also cancelled.
A columnist in the Deseret News is posing the question of whether BYU should rejoin the Mountain West Conference. The Cougars are good for a great gate. They have traditionally been the top draw on host team schedules.
As noted, the University of Iowa will play in Sioux Falls, this time against Oregon State. With the growth of Sioux Falls, the eastern edge of Sioux Falls is now within 10 miles of Iowa. Kudos should go to the Sioux Falls Sports Authority and Sanford Health for getting the game.
One interesting thing came out when the Big Ten cancelled non-conference games. UNI was paid more to play at Iowa than South Dakota State was to play at Nebraska.
Congratulations to Katelyn Stanley, who will be playing Division I basketball starting her sophomore year. The University of St. Thomas will play in the Summit League beginning 2021-22.
It will be an interesting sports year if and when it starts.
