It was exciting watching Sports Center’s top 10 plays the other day. Number one was USD’s Chris Nilsen setting an NCAA indoor pole vault record of 19-5.5. The achievement came at a meet at the University of Nebraska.

Number nine was the South Dakota State women’s basketball team. At a shoot-around at the University of North Dakota, the Jack Rabbits took shots from half-court and made five consecutive shots.

It’s fun watching the USD-SDSU teams, as they are full of players from the four-state area. The two senior starters on the SDSU team are transfers from Iowa (from Sioux Falls) and Nebraska (from Fremont). The top two recruits for USD are from Rapid Stevens and Sioux Falls Lincoln. Attendance for the women’s game was 3,672 and the men’s 4,572.

Midco carried the Minnesota Girls State Hockey tournament. Unbelievable number of Division I commits – one sophomore has already committed to Minnesota. One of the TV sponsors was the University of Northern Iowa.

UNI has been successful recruiting Minnesota for other sports. The Southern Illinois at UNI basketball game drew 6,497 on Sunday.

Clemson has bought out its contract to host Wyoming in 2021. Instead, they will play Georgia in Charlotte. The buyout is $1,100,00 for Wyoming. Georgia was to play San Jose State, who will now get a $1,800,000 cancellation fee.

Basketball regions are upon us. A number of teams could make it to state.
