South Dakota is lucky compared to some of our neighbors. Our legislature will soon be done for the year.
It seems the first part of each session is about social issues and the last is when the business of the state gets done.
For years, the legislature had strong leaders like Joe Barnett of Aberdeen. Former Governor Walt Miller and former U.S. Senator Jim Abdnor, when serving in the legislature, both focused on issues of governing the state, broad significant issues that had impact.
Former Representative David Lust said it is as important to not pass bad bills as it is to pass good bills.
There seem to be two parties within one, the Republican. A former legislator is challenging incumbent Congressman Dusty Johnson in a primary and a current legislator is challenging U.S. Senator Mike Rounds in a primary.
It is an imperfect system, but much better than all alternatives.
Remember to participate and vote.
