Dorothy Mae Horton, 97, of Elk Point, passed away Oct. 28, 2019 at Bethesda of Beresford.
Due to Covid virus restrictions, private family graveside service will be held May 23, 2020.
Dorothy Mae Bair was born Oct. 19, 1922 in rural Odebolt, IA to Warren and Elsie (Johnson) Bair. She attended rural schools and graduated from high school at Ida Grove, IA in 1940.
She was married to Earl M. Horton on Thanksgiving Day, 1942, at Albuquerque, NM where Earl was stationed in the Army Air Corps. At the end of WWII, the couple moved back to the family farm at Elk Point where Dorothy lived until a fall necessitated her moving to Bethesda. She was proud of having lived on the family homestead for nearly 70 years.
Dorothy was baptized at Arthur, IA and was later confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Elk Point where she remained a member until her death. She served as a Sunday School teacher and was a member of the St. Paul Ladies Aid.
Dorothy had an intense love of history, genealogy and antiques. She also enjoyed hosting barbeques and sledding parties for family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl; her parents; her brothers, Robert Bair and John Bair; and a great-grandson.
Dorothy is survived by two children, Jon (Joan) Horton of Earlham, IA and Glenadene (Paul) Aamot of Beresford; five grandchildren, Julie Horton, Carla (Gordon) Morgan, Betsy Kemner, Bjorn (Anne) Aamot and Liv (Jerami) West; 13 great-grandchildren; her sister, Donna Hoy, Mesa, AZ; two sisters-in-law, Patricia Bair Cannealy and Jane Bair; a niece; three nephews; and several cousins.
