When about 1,200 feet of North Sioux City’s Fire Department hoses failed testing in September, firefighter Joe Pham put an idea into action. He took 13 hose ends, all nine feet long and painted them into a red-line American flag to represent firefighters. It’s a symbol used by fire departments to show respect for firefighters injured and killed in the line of duty. The hoses were connected to an old pike pole. Pham had help from Captain Levi Saunders, Lieutenant Faustin Mahlke and firefighter Thomas Young. It took four to five days to complete.
