The Elk Point Chamber has started a winter clothing drive to collect new and gently-used coats, boots, snowpants, mittens, gloves, hats and scarves.
Items can be dropped off at Union County Electric, 122 W. Main, or the Leader-Courier, 108 W. Main, during normal business hours during November. It will be donated to the Elk Point Food Pantry and Elk Point-Jefferson Schools.
Chamber members voted to approve the project at their regular meeting Thursday, Oct. 28 at A-1 Quick Stop. They also approved an annual donation to the EPJ Backpack program of $5 per backpack. Those funds help purchase food items that are sent home with children whose families would like extra help with food on weekends.
This year’s Halloween party had to be cancelled, so the chamber will consider changing the date from Oct. 31 to earlier in the season, so more members can take part. They are also looking at a Christmas activity, perhaps a parade of lights with other family activities.
The chamber wants to add a Community Calendar to the city’s website, where groups can post their events.
The group’s next meeting will be Thursday, Jan. 28.
