The North Sioux City Fire Department conducted a controlled burn Sunday, July 19. The house and barn previously belonging to Bridget Flynn, located at 3130 State Hwy 105, were burned to prepare for future development of the property.

The property now belongs to the North Sioux City Fire District and is the location for their new training facilities. According to Assistant Fire Chief Jim Christenson, people will start seeing some construction activity out there as they will be cleaning up and putting up a fence. The fire district purchased the property after realizing a training facility would be needed when the City of North Sioux City reconnects Streeter Drive onto Sodrac Drive. Since the current road is a dead end, the fire department utilizes that section of road for their training purposes, which will no longer be an option once the roads are realigned.

The fire department stated that no trespassing will be allowed on the posted private property. This is not only due to it being private property but because of the conditions the ground is in after burning the house and barn.

“It is a dangerous place due to the debris and holes left in the ground from the burn and other not seen hazards,” a Facebook post from the department stated. “Also note, we are checking on the property on a regular basis, and we are aware there is still some smoke and flames. These are contained and will be monitored. Unless it appears it is out of control or spreading quickly, there is no need to call it in."
