Burbank Beach

A Mercy helicopter lifts off from a sand bar in the Missouri River just west of Burbank Beach Friday afternoon. A young man was transported after injuring himself diving into the river. Another incident Sunday afternoon resulted in the arrest of a man on multiple assault charges.

A sand bar west of Burbank Beach saw a lot of action this weekend, not all of it good.

The afternoon of Friday, May 1, the Elk Point Ambulance and the Union County Sheriff’s Department responded to a call of a man who could not move his arms and legs. He reportedly dove into the Missouri River and hit his head on a sumerged sandbar. Crews boated across the river, but decided they could not safely transport the man on a backboard across the water. Mercy’s helicopter was called and made the transport.

Sunday, May 3, Union County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested Preston Moss, 18, of Dakota Dunes, after an incident at the beach.

Union County Sheriff Dan Limoges said his office received a call of gunshots fired at the area along the Missouri River west of Elk Point. Two groups got into a dispute and Moss allegedly pulled a gun, threatened several people and fired three shots.
