The Elk Point-Jefferson School Board ended a months-long search to fill the position of Elementary Principal/District SPED Director Janet Ries at their month meeting Monday, April, 13, held via Zoom.

They hired Laura Throener, who is currently a Speech/Language Pathologist with the South Sioux City School District. She will take over for Ries July 1. Watch for more on Ries and Throener in upcoming editions.

Superintendent Derek Barrios started the meeting by thanking district staff for all they’ve been doing since March 13.

“I just want to thank all of our staff for what they’ve done these past few weeks,” he said. “They’ve done a great job of embracing a situation as best as they all can, of taking on a new challenge. It’s been a large learning curve for everyone. Also thanks to LSI [Lunchtime Solutions, Inc.] for providing sack lunches to any child 18 and under.”

He also thanked staff who had organized a district parade to be held Friday, April 17 through Elk Point and Jefferson, starting at 10 a.m.

The board also heard a proposal for high school graduation. Middle School/High School Principal Skyler Eriksen said the current plan is to hold a virtual graduation ceremony on the scheduled date of May 16 and, hopefully, a traditional ceremony Aug. 8. The virtual ceremony would highlight as much of the traditional ceremony with tapes of speeches and honors recognition. He also said the curriculum committee hopes to finalize a decision in the next few days on how grades will be calculated for the fourth quarter.
