Heather Nelson, of Dakota Dunes, is the new president of Dakota Valley’s Parent/Teacher Organization (PTO) and she is happy to give back to a community that has been a good home for her and her family. Nelson and her husband, Dan, moved here seven years ago because they saw many qualities in the Dakota Valley School District that would be beneficial for their three children.
“I am from Watertown, SD and have attended five different elementary schools, one junior high and one high school,” Nelson detailed. “We chose DV since both Dan and I both went to public schools and found success after. DV is a good cross between our two schools we went to.”
Nelson’s relationship with the PTO began first as an event volunteer. She had a friend who was serving as a committee chairperson at the time and needed some extra help. It was for a hospitality project that involved a gift or meal for the teachers and staff.
“I stay home and around that time my youngest (Samantha) was in preschool so I had a little more free time,” Nelson explained. “When my twins (Alex and Geoff) were younger I liked to volunteer in their classes if the teachers wanted help – that’s where I saw the need to help out with the PTO more. A year later I chaired the Daddy-Daughter Dance and a year after that I added on the upper elementary’s [UE] AR [Accelerated Reader] store. Now I just chair the UE AR store and the presidency, but I help out with many of the other committees.”
