Union County Electric Cooperative has announced a new power source – the sun.

The coop, through its membership in East River Electric, will be part of the Wild Springs Solar Project, a 128-megawatt clean solar energy project to be built 20 miles east of Rapid City.

Coop general manager Matt Klein said this energy comes at a competitive price, compared to other generation sources.

“The solar generation will become part of our total generation mix, which includes wind, hydroelectric, natural gas, nuclear and coal,” Klein said.

Wild Springs is a joint project of Geronimo Energy, a national grid company, and Basin Electric Power Cooperative, of which East River is a member. It will be the largest solar project in South Dakota.
