Penfield remembered for service to Elk Point

The city of Elk Point is mourning the loss of longtime Ward 2 representative and City Council President Lance Penfield, who died Oct. 13 in Omaha, Nebraska.
Unified bowlers shine at area competition

Elk Point-Jefferson’s Unified Special Olympics Bowling team was in Sioux Falls on Saturday, October 11 and Sunday, October 12, 2025 for an area competition. The 1st day of the contest was for individual bowling and the 2nd day consisted of doubles. Cassandra Schmith accompanied the EPJ bowlers. Schmith works with the Huskies in the school’s Structured Learning Center and is also the Unified Cham- pion Special Olympics Coach.

County approves bridge bids

The Union County Commission handled a full agenda Tuesday, approving abatements, awarding bridge contracts and appointing a new interim Register of Deeds during its Feb. 3 regular meeting at the courthouse. Chairman Kevin Joffer called the meeting to order with commissioners Michael Dailey, Bob Ballard, Tom Kimmel and Peggy Ustad present.

EP council OKs utility rates, playground bid

The Elk Point City Council approved new util‑ity rates, playground equipment and several equip‑ment purchases during its regular meeting Feb. 2 at City Hall. Strong turnout for first‑ever DV Spark Market

The inaugural event, organized by the Dakota Valley Parent‑Teacher Or‑ganization and presented by Peoples Bank, brought together K–8 students who spent weeks creat‑ing products, planning displays and learning the basics of running a small business.
