Independence Waste of Elk Point is no longer operating. A message on the company’s answering machine asks that, if possible, customers return their garbage containers to their location south of Elk Point. Communities the company served are recommending customers find a new provider.

In Jefferson, the council held a special meeting to find a replacement for the service. (See story below.) The city of Elk Point has its own garbage service, but many rural customers were affected by the closing.

Co-owner Pete Kramer’s son, Kyle Kramer, and daughter, Torrie Baker, released a letter apologizing on behalf of their father, who is in an assisted living unit in Florida. Pete’s wife, Kay, the other co-owner has run the business since November 2017. She has been unavailable for comment.
